Hair care lesson by Hama-chan (vol.7) Silicone shampoo or non-silicone shampoo?

    August 14, 2013

    Hama-chan:

Last time we talked about silicone as a substance, today we will talk about silicone shampoo and treatment.

    Yumi:

We had great responses from our readers regarding your last lecture. Everyone is waiting for today’s lecture.

    Hama-chan:

Great to hear that. Thanks everyone!

First of all, generally speaking, shampoo normally does not contain silicone.  It sounds surprising to many of you, but it is an error to think that all the shampoo have silicone inside.

    Yumi:

I was surprised to hear that. Since we heard about “non-silicone” shampoo, we tend to think that every shampoo but “non-silicone” ones contains silicone.

    Hama-chan:

    That’s right.

Shampoo is a product to clean your hair, on the other hand, silicone is a substance to make hair smoother.

Therefore, it makes sense that we should use silicone in treatment instead of shampoo.

    Yumi:

    That makes sense.

    Hama-chan:

I have never seen professional shampoo at hair salon containing silicone. On the other hand, 80% of treatment at hair salon contains silicone.

Well, I only purchase professional shampoo at hair salon, based on my observation, in terms of public products, more than half of shampoo sold at drug stores and supermarkets does not contain silicone, and most of treatment contain silicone.

    Hama-chan:

Although less than half of shampoo does contain silicone, those product has a very high market share, realistically more than half of Japanese population choose to use silicone shampoo.

    Yumi:

Besides people care about constituent or not, majority of people tend to choose shampoo which contains silicone.

    Hama-chan:

    That’s right.

Technically speaking, professional shampoo is made to achieve a good washing result with mild detergency, using high quality and expensive ingredients.  On the other hand, domestic shampoo is also made to achieve a good washing result but using cheap ingredients with too much detergency, therefore it need silicone to give back a good texture.

    Yumi:

We are now coming to the point of discussion!

    Hama-chan:

Both developers for professional and domestic products look for the same results, but their approach is different.

Of course, professional products that use higher quality surfactant is better because it does not take away hair nutrition by using mild detergent which is different from taking away nutrition with high detergent then add other material such as silicone to make up a loss.

    Yumi:

    Sure…

    Hama-chan:

However, it is difficult to give an answer to the question; which one is better between cheap and good restaurant or expensive and good restaurant?

    Yumi:

This depends on one’s sense of value.

    Hama-chan:

OK, I will give you a secret at the end of the lecture.

    Yumi:

    What is that?

    Hama-chan:

Some people buy expensive treatment at hair salon when they have hair problems.  However, the best products at hair salon is actually shampoo!  Therefore, if you do not want to spend too much money, you should buy a high quality shampoo at hair salon and get a less expensive domestic treatment!

    Yumi:

That’s useful information. Thanks a lot. Looking forward to your next lecture.
