Hair care lesson by Hama-chan (vol.8) How to take care of hair during rainy season

    August 26, 2013

    Yumi:

Today’s lesson with Hama-chan is how to take care of hair during rainy season.

Well, I have to admit I have a problem myself taking care of my hair during rainy season.

    Hama-chan:

    Your hair get frizzy easily.

    Yumi:

But I do not want to rely on straight perm.

    Hama-chan:

    There are many people who have the same problems and concerns, such as;

    • Do not want to use straight perm although frizzy hair get worse due to the humidity
    • Cannot keep curly hair done using curling tongs
    • Cannot do a good styling in rainy season

And these problems are caused by humidity.

    Hama-chan:

First of all, we need to know about hair.  There is hydrogen bond inside of hair; it breaks when the hair is wet, and get back when hair is dry.  Due to this mechanism, hair tousled during sleep and can be fixed by wetting one’s hair or can make hair styling with hair dryer.

During rainy season, hydrogen bond becomes unstable due to the weather condition. We need to decrease the amount of water coming in and out of hair to solve the problem.

Therefore, there is only one solution; we need to cover hair with oils and fat to prevent water coming in. We can use oil, hair cream, in-the-bathroom treatments, out-the-bathroom treatments, and wax.

    Yumi:

I see. By covering hair with oils and fat hair will be protected from humidity.

    Hama-chan:

We need to cover hair with oils and fat before and after drying hair.

    Yumi:

    That’s easy solution!

    Hama-chan:

There is a tip for using out-the-bathroom treatments. If hair is too dry, even if we use out-the-bathroom, the hair still get moisture from outside, therefore, we need to put the treatments when hair has certain moisture inside.

    Yumi:

OK. It means we keep water inside of hair.  At first we apply out-the-bathroom when the hair is wet, then we dry the hair.

    Hama-chan:

That’s right.  In that way, even after drying hair, healthy hair should contains 10 – 15% of water inside. Same as one’s skin, we need oil to keep water inside.

    Yumi:

We put milky lotion after lotion on our face. It is the same logic.

    Hama-chan:

In-the-bath treatments after shampoo is also very important especially during rainy season.

    For someone who has a problem with frizzy hair or hair expansion;

At first, apply moisture when doing in-the-bath treatment, then put milky base and dry, after make a styling with oily wax or hair cream.

    For someone who cannot keep a styling due to humidity;

At first, apply firm in-the-bath treatments, then put oily base and dry, after make a styling with strong wax or hair spray.

Also, having a treatments at hair salon is a good idea. You can see the difference clearly during this season.

    Yumi:

Really? I should make a reservation at my hair salon.

    Hama-chan:

There is one more technique. You can wash in-the-bath treatments out, you wash gently to leave the treatments on hair. If you do not have milky out-the-bathroom treatment, you can mix in-the-bath treatments with water as an alternative.

    Yumi:

Thank you for sharing underhanded trick!

    Hama-chan:

I also want to tell your audience.

Many people believe that people with thin hair do not have problem with hair expansion, and people who have thick hair have problem with hair expansion.

    Yumi:

    Isn’t true?

    Hama-chan:

People who have thin hair use hair dryer to make temporary volume then because of humidity the shape will go down and loose the volume.

People who have thick hair use hair dryer to put down the volume temporary, then due to the humidity the shape cannot be kept and hair will be expanded.

Therefore, humidity itself does not make hair volume up or down.

    Yumi:

I thought my hair expand because I have thick hair which takes a lot of outside humidity . The truth is usually I try to make the volume down with hair dryer, but due to the humidity it cannot be kept and expand as a result.

    Hama-chan:

That’s right. Maybe some hairdressers even do not know this logic, that’s why I wanted to share this information with everyone.

    Yumi:

Thank you very much for your lecture today.
