Hama-chan’s hair-care lesson (vol. 5) How to choose a right shampoo?
July 29, 2013
Hama-chan:
Today I will talk about how to choose the right shampoo.
First of all, I will make two categories; commercial products and professional products.
The commercial products are the one you can buy at drug store or convenience stores. The professional products are the one we use at hair salons.
Yumi:
I think shampoo at hair salons are much more expensive. Are professional products better than commercial products?
Hama-chan:
OK. I will explain the difference on the chart, using an example of fortune-telling.
Yumi:
Which means professional products have much more variety?
Hama-chan:
Yes. In general, commercial products are made for general public. For example, we often see products for 2 type of hair; “sara-sara” for normal hair and “shittori” for damaged hair requiring extra moisture.
On the other hand, professional products have stronger character for each type of hair, so we need to be careful for choosing the right type.
Yumi:
OK. So, which one shall we choose? More expensive one better?
Hama-chan:
Personally, people who have no problem with using commercial products, do not need to buy at hair salons.
If you have problems such as dry hair ends, difficulty in styling, loosing color, those problems might be solved by professional products.
Yumi:
How can we choose professional products?
Hama-chan:
It is complicated to choose professional products by yourself since there are so many different kinds depending on the type and conditions of hair. Therefore, the best is to talk to your hair dresser to get recommendations and then you can choose one of them.
Yumi:
What women in UNIQUE PIECE generation have to be careful on choosing shampoo?
Hama-chan:
Majority of people thinks shampoo is a product to wash hair. However, shampoo is actually a product to wash the scalp more than hair.
Yumi:
Wow! Actually when I have a shampoo at hair salon, I feel like they are washing my scalp more than just hair.
Hama-chan:
What they have to be careful aboout is to choose mild shampoo. Many people tend to choose strong shampoo with strong washing power. Those shampoo tend to take too much oil or sebum which increases damage scalp and hair.
Yumi:
How do we recognize strong shampoo and mild shampoo?
Hama-chan:
Generally speaking, you can tell from the amount of bubbles that shampoo makes. More bubbles, stronger and irritant is the shampoo.
Finally, here is the criteria for choosing right the shampoo.
People who should choose professional products;
- having difficulty of styling due to frizzy hair
- coloring or perm does not last long
- having difficulty of styling due to volume of hair
- want to increase hair volume
- many breakage on hair ends
- improve the hair conditions, make it firm, or make it more shinny
- growing their hair
- having a lot of damage hair
People who can use commercial products
- normal hair condition without damage
People who should use commercial products
- having an extremely thin hair, or having messy hair due to high damage
=> some commercial products contains silicon which prevent hair from being messy
- very dirty hair, cannot wash properly due to long fingernails
=> commercial products have stronger washing power
