Hair care lesson by Hama-chan (vol.11) Difference between grey covering hair color and standard hair color

    October 18, 2013

    Hama-chan:

Today I would like to talk about the difference between colour covering grey hair and standard hair colour.

    Yumi:

We would like to know about this topic. Please go on.

    Hama-chan:

To make it simple, argy coverage hair colour is consist of standard hair colour dyes and brown colour dyes.

    Hama-chan:

History of hair colouring in Japan started with grey covering hair colour since it was just a minority of people who dyed their hair besides covering grey hair. Therefore, the word “hair colour” meant “grey covering hair colour.”

    Yumi:

It is the first time for me to hear about that.

    Hama-chan:

In the old time, people used to call standard hair colour “oshare-zome” or fashion colour to make a difference from grey hair cover colour. Then, with the change in life style and demands, standard hair colour, that we use today, were created without using brown hair dyes.

    Yumi:

It is interesting to know the history of hair colour.

    Hama-chan:

Therefore, compared to the standard hair colour which has variety of colours and tones, covering grey hair colour are darker in colour and tone since dark brown dyes are added.

    Yumi:

    OK, I understand so far.

    Hama-chan:

Some people have negative image towards using covering grey hair colour, however, there is not so much difference from standard hair colour. To prove that, we can use grey covering hair colour for people who do not have grey hair at all to make hair colour darker.  Or we can apply standard colour to grey hair as well. Recently what we call covering grey hair colour is actually between standard hair colour and classic grey hair colour in old time. We only use classic   covering grey hair colour for people who have a huge amount of grey hair. Therefore, please do not think using covering grey hair colour means you are old lady.

    Yumi:

That is right. When I was 35 years old, I asked my hairstylist if I should start using  grey hair colour, and he replied to me that he had been using that for a long time already. I was surprised that I did not even notice.

    Hama-chan:

I see. We should know that difference between two, but more important thing is we do not decide to order covering grey hair colour just because we see grey in our hair.

    Yumi:

    What does it mean?

    Hama-chan:

It means that we should know that hairstylists can answer to your requests regardless of grey hair.  If you tell them what you want, we can propose the best hair colour either covering grey hair colour or standard hair colour.

    Yumi:

It is not always easy to tell hairstylists clearly what we want.

    Hama-chan:

No problem. Here is the frequently asked requests.

    1)    It is OK to have hair colour darker but want to cover the grey hair completely.

    2)    Do not want hair to be dark but want to cover the grey hair.

    3)    Only want bright hair colour

If you tell this at the beginning to your hairstylist, it will be easier for the hairstylist to understand your request and you can communicate better with him/her to have your ideal hair to be done.

    Yumi:

Thank you for the useful information as usual.
